Lost amidst the Sixers impressive game 3 victory over the Atlanta Hawks was Danny Green exiting the contest after just four minutes with a right leg injury. A subsequent MRI later later revealed a calf strain.
The 33-year-old guard will miss the remainder of the current series, and will not be re-evaluated for at least two weeks.
Green had started each of the Sixers' first eight playoff games with averages of 7.0 points on 43.8% shooting, including 37.8 from 3-point range. He also collected 1.1 steals and one block. Though hardly spectacular numbers, the 12-year-veteran is a big piece of the opening unit with his floor-spacing ability and defensive acumen. His steady presence and 153 games of postseason experience will be sorely missed.
The Sixers have options to replace Green. If they continue to value the off-ball spacing--not out of the question in a lineup with Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid--they could turn to Furkan Korkmaz, who has buried 244 threes at 39.0% over the past two regular seasons, and is at 37.5% in this year's playoffs thus far. Conversely, if they want to go with lockdown defense, Matisse Thybulle is absolutely the way to go. They 24-year-old sophomore has outrageous block and steal numbers in his brief career (4.0% and 3.7%, respectively) and has quickly established himself at one of the elite wing defenders in the game. To that end, he has averaged 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks in just 17.8 minutes in the playoffs.
