A familiar face is rumored to be on the Sixers' radar.
The Pelicans are gauging the market for sharpshooting guard JJ Redick, and the Sixers are one of the teams they may be negotiating with. Per Shams Charania of The Athletic:
"As Feb. 2 looms as the NBA’s deadline for teams to aggregate acquired players in a trade later, the New Orleans Pelicans have focused on the Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics as potential trade destinations..."
The Sixers, he notes, 'have expressed interest' in acquiring the 36-year-old.
Redick has struggled mightily this year, shooting 33.6% from the field and just 29.8% on 3-point attempts. Those numbers are massive outliers, however--just last year, Redick shot 45.3% from deep, and he entered this season a career 41.6% 3-point shooter.
Besides, the Sixers are well aware of how lethal Redick is when he's right. He played for the Sixers from 2017-2019 appearing in 146 games supplying 17.6 points per game and shooting 40.7% from deep on 7.3 attempts. His 3-point cannon fit like a glove between Ben Simmons' drives and Joel Embiid's post ups.
The 6'3" guard also has extensive familiarity playing for current Sixers head coach Doc Rivers. The two spent 2013-2017 together with the Los Angeles Clippers. He shot even better from three in that time at 44.0%.
Seth Curry and Danny Green were acquired in the offseason to help the spacing in the starting lineup, and both have acclimated to their roles well, combining to shoot 41.9% on 3-pointers. One thing that recent NBA trends have proven, though, is that no team can have enough shooting, and if the cost isn't too prohibitive (it shouldn't be--Redick is on a $13.1 million expiring contract and figures to have no place in the Pelicans' future plans), the veteran is well worth a look.
